Specialists assume that the eruption in the Grímsvötn volcano on Vatnajökull glacier will continue to be forceful in the coming days, accompanied by significant ash fall. The eruption’s strength is now comparable to the eruption in Eyjafjallajökull at its height.

At 2 pm it was dark as night in Kirkjubaejarklaustur. An ash storm is raging and people don’t even go between houses, ruv.is reports.

A local farmer said it was as if someone had glued black plastic bags on the windows. He has lost at least one ewe and one lamb in the natural disaster.

Not everyone can put their sheep inside and some farmers have instead provided plenty of hay and running water for their livestock.

East of the Skeidarársandur plains the visibility is a few hundred meters. The Ring Road from Vík and eastwards across the plains is still closed.
