Professional truck drivers used their trucks to block main traffic veins like Ártúnsbrekka in Iceland’s capital region yesterday to protest high fuel prices and force the government into action. They took similar measures on Friday.
Truck drivers are also objecting to regulations on for how long they are permitted to drive without resting, 24 Stundir reports. Apparently these regulations, which were adopted in the EU some years ago, are not suitable for Icelandic conditions.
Minister of Transport Kristján Möller has invited truck drivers to a meeting. “What concerns my ministry are the regulations on driving and resting, which the truck drivers have been dissatisfied with,” the minister told Fréttabladid.
In terms of fuel prices, truck drivers are dissatisfied with how high a percentage the state claims of every sold liter of fuel and demand solutions from the Ministry of Finance.
According to trucker Sturla Jónsson, this high price of fuel affects the public too. “Where is the pay raise people were given the other day? It simply evaporates when the price of one liter of gas increases by three krónur [ISK 3 = USD 0.04, EUR 0.02],” Jónsson said, adding that people support the truck drivers’ actions and many have called to thank them.
Truck drivers will protest again today along with jeep drivers, who are members of the travel club 4x4, on Austurvöllur square in downtown Reykjavík today at 4 pm.
The 11th annual Night of Lights festival begins today in Reykjanesbaer municipality in southwest Iceland. Tomorrow and Saturday night, many of the country’s best bands will play in Reykjanesbaer and on Sunday local choirs will entertain guests.

Iceland’s cabinet met at the presidential residence Bessastadir at noon today where new ministers were announced: Gudbjartur Hannesson of the Social Democrats will lead a new Welfare Ministry and Ögmundur Jónasson of the Left-Greens a new Ministry for Internal Affairs.

The average temperature of the three summer months, June, July and August, in Reykjavík this year was 12.2°C (54°F), which makes this the warmest summer in the capital since temperatures were first recorded in 1871, according to meteorologist Trausti Jónsson.

Former President of Iceland Vigdís Finnbogadóttir turned 80 on 15 April this year and Mayor Hanna Birna Kristjánsdóttir—in making her an Honorary Citizen of Reykjavík to mark the occasion—observed that Finnbogadóttir’s life was interwoven with that of Reykjavík. In June 1980 Finnbogadóttir made history when she became the world’s first democratically elected female head of state.
