Iceland lost against hosts Sweden, 0-4, in the quarter finals of the UEFA Women’s EURO 2013 yesterday.
Iceland beat the Netherlands last week, 1-0, to progress to the quarter finals. The win was significant because it was the first time the Icelandic national team made it past the group stage of a final tournament at any level.
Iceland defender Ólina Vidarsdóttir told uefa.com that it had been difficult to go into the second half 0-3 and that Sweden were clearly the better team on the day. “We came here as underdogs. Nobody believed in us except for ourselves. We know what we’re capable of and we’re very proud to be here today even if the result wasn’t a good one,” she said, adding that the team will qualify again next year. “The future is bright; we’ve got good young players coming through.”
