Icelandic airline Wow Air is planning to launch scheduled flights to the U.S. in the spring of 2014, as confirmed by CEO Skúli Mogensen in an interview with Danish aviation news website standby.dk.

“That’s right. Today we are only a travel agency with rented aircraft. But as of September this year we expect Wow Air to have its own air operator’s certificate,” Skúli reveals.
Wow Air, which took over Iceland Express last October, offers flights to Copenhagen, London Gatwick and Alicante, among other destinations.
“Flights to Iceland are very important,” says Skúli. “Tourism makes up 15 percent of Iceland’s GDP. There is room for low-budget airlines such as Wow Air … but Wow Air must grow carefully.”

The road to Höfn, a 1,690-person harbor town by the fjord Hornafjörður, is lined with reindeer. Whole herds of the wild horned animals rest peacefully on withered pastures, grace next to sheep and horses and bounce along the road. Soon, Vatnajökull, Europe’s largest glacier and the region’s biggest attraction, comes into view. Looming over Höfn, its outlet glaciers flow down from the mountains on which the bright white icecap rests.
