A new Icelander arrived around midnight in the blizzard on Wednesday night while his parents were trying to get from Húsavík in Northeast Iceland where they live to the hospital in Akureyri. The boy was born in the ambulance.
The road across the Víkurskarð mountain pass was impassable. Local search and rescue team Garðar was called out, along with a snowplow to clear the old road through Dalsmynni, visir.is reports.
Midway through Dalsmynni the boy wouldn’t wait any longer. The birth went well and afterwards the ambulance managed to reach Akureyri where mother and child were admitted to the delivery room, both in good health.
The boy has not been named but his parents, Guðrún and Guðbergur, have been encouraged to name him Garðar after the search and rescue team and Ford after the ambulance.

The road to Höfn, a 1,690-person harbor town by the fjord Hornafjörður, is lined with reindeer. Whole herds of the wild horned animals rest peacefully on withered pastures, grace next to sheep and horses and bounce along the road. Soon, Vatnajökull, Europe’s largest glacier and the region’s biggest attraction, comes into view. Looming over Höfn, its outlet glaciers flow down from the mountains on which the bright white icecap rests.
