Ólafur Stephensen, editor of Iceland’s biggest daily newspaper, Fréttablaðið (part of 365 Media, owned by Ingibjörg Pálmadóttir, the wife of tycoon Jón Ásgeir Jóhannesson), indicated in a radio interview today that Jón Ásgeir had tried to censor the news.

In the interview on radio station Bylgjan, Ólafur was asked whether claims made in an open letter on visir.is by Stöð 2 journalist Magnús Halldórsson (all three media outlets are also part of 365) were true.
In the letter, Magnús maintained that Jón Ásgeir had tried to influence how he and the court cases he is involved in are portrayed in the news.
“A thorough professional journalist like Magnús does not write any nonsense,” Ólafur stated in the radio interview, mbl.is reports.
“We work according to ethical guidelines, where professionalism is above what the media’s owners might like or dislike. We stand by that policy, always,” Ólafur concluded.
