Pirate Party: Dope Tests Invasion of Privacy

New Icelandic political party The Pirate Party (Píratapartíið) has labeled the dope tests by fishing company Vinnslustöðin in Vestmannaeyjar, on the island of Heimaey off the south coast of Iceland, which led to the sacking of 11 staff, an invasion of privacy as the drugs could have been consumed during their time off, visir.is reports.

As reported on Monday, the tests were carried out on five of the company’s seven trawlers. Eleven employees on three of the trawlers were fired after testing positive. All employees yet to take a test will be ordered to do so in the near future.

Director of the company Sigurgeir Brynjar Kristgeirsson told Fréttablaðið that the company’s employees were informed of the company’s policy of zero tolerance to dope and of carrying out narcotics tests last summer.

According to Sigurgeir, around 100 people applied for the positions made available after the sacking.
