Minister of Industry and Innovation Steingrímur J. Sigfússon, says the government has decided to put ISK 20 million (USD 158,000, EUR 116,000) into marketing saltfiskur, Icelandic dried and salted fish (similar to Spanish bacalao), abroad
Producers of saltfiskur, Matís food and biotech research institute and Promote Iceland have been discussing the need for a special marketing campaign because of the economic crisis in Europe and the large increase in the supply of fish.
According to ruv.is, Steingrímur also hopes to work in cooperation with buyers abroad. The marketing efforts will be ongoing until Easter, an important time for the sale of the fish.
The funds will be used for strengthening ties in the market as well as the trademark.
The economic crisis in Europe has also impacted the export of lamb from Europe. Last year, a mere 11 kilos were exported to Spain—the weight of around four legs of lamb—down from several hundred tons in previous years.
