Man Sentenced to 16 Years for Murder
The Supreme Court confirmed the Reykjanes District Court’s 16-year sentence over a 23-year-old man, Hlífar Vatnar Stefánsson, for the murder of a woman in February last year.

The man repeatedly stabbed the woman. Twenty-seven stab wounds were found on her body. The man was also ordered to pay ISK 2 million (USD 15,500, EUR 11,660) in damages to the victim’s son and ISK 3 million to her parents, ruv.is reports.
A psychiatric evaluation determined that the man was intelligent by nature but had a longstanding problem with drugs. The evaluation described him as anti-social and showing signs of a personality disorder and no signs of remorse. However, the evaluation ruled him to be compos mentis.
The jury concluded that the murder was premeditated and particularly brutal.
In an unrelated case, the Supreme Court sentenced a man, Guðgeir Guðmundsson, to 14 years in prison for the attempted murder of the CEO of a law firm in March last year. The man stabbed the victim repeatedly. The man then stabbed a lawyer in the leg when he came to the assistance of his colleague.
The man was also ordered to pay the first victim ISK 3 million in damages and the other ISK 800,000, visir.is reports.

The Identification Committee of the National Commissioner of the Icelandic Police is working on the identification of a body swept up on the beach at Kaldbaksvík in Strandir, the eastern West Fjords, on Saturday. The body was found by travelers in the area.
