The tide of migration from Iceland has turned, according to the latest figures from Statistics Iceland. In the fourth quarter of 2012, a total of 660 Icelandic citizens migrated back to Iceland, compared to 650 who emigrated. In addition, 340 foreign citizens moved abroad.
In the last three months of 2012, 970 foreigners moved to Iceland, the largest group from Poland, followed by citizens of the United States.
As of January 1, 2013, the population of Iceland stands at 321,890, 161,440 males and 160,450 females. The new figures represent an increase of 1,230 individuals from the previous quarter.
Just over 100,000 people live outside the capital region, which has a population of around 200,000 inhabitants, slightly more when the surrounding areas are considered.

Today is the Second Day of Whitsun, or Pentecost, a Christian holiday and bank holiday in Iceland. Although Whitsun is a religious holiday, many people skip mass and use the opportunity to engage in outdoor activities with their friends and families.
