Hardy Rams Survive in Blizzard-Stricken Highlands

Two male lambs were reclaimed by farmer Birgir V. Hauksson at Hella in the rural Mývatn district in Northeast Iceland on Wednesday. They survived the blizzard that struck mountain pastures and the heavy snowfall the region has been subject to since.

The tough young rams were spotted by Andri Karlsson, inhabitant of Reykjahlíð, in the southern slope of Hlíðarfjall when he drove past the mountain. He called skidoo owner Daði Lange Friðriksson, who picked them up, 641.is reports.

Daði commented that the rams were in incredibly good shape given the ordeals they’ve been through. He found it likely that they had become snowed under in September but managed to dig themselves out as markings on their horns indicate.

The lambs are the offspring of the ram Jökull and ewe Spesía from Hella—the ewe was not recovered last autumn and is assumed to be among the around 10,000 sheep that perished in the blizzard. These last two survivors were found after 110 days.
