Only once, in 1924, has Reykjavík seen more hours of sunshine than in 2012. A total of 1,585 hours of sunshine was recorded last year, short of the 1,641 hour record from 1924.
In Akureyri, North Iceland, the sunshine record was broken, with 1,415 hours, up by 140 days from the year 2000, according to the Icelandic Met Office.
In 2012, the average temperature in Reykjavík, 5.5ºC (41.9ºF), was above the overall average, 4.3ºC (39.74ºF) for the 17th year in a row.
Another weather record was broken last Friday, December 28, when precipitation in Reykjavík measured 70.4 mm in a 24-hour period, 14 mm more than the previous record set in 1920, ruv.is reports. The capital saw close to ten percent of the total precipitation for the year in just one day.

The festival Reykjavík Music Mess kicks off at KEX Hostel in the center of the capital with an opening party on May 23 at 8 pm. An art exhibition themed around the participating bands will open at the occasion and Boogie Trouble will play a few songs. Entry is free.
