Sales of Icelandic beer have increased substantially in the past year. Eight out of the ten highest-selling beers in Iceland are produced domestically with Icelandic beer having proven popular with both Icelanders and foreign visitors.
In 2012, 14.4 million liters of beer, both home-brewed and imported, were sold in Iceland, 3.75 million liters of which was produced in Iceland, ruv.is reports.
Ölgerðin and Vífilfell produce 93.1 percent of Icelandic beer with smaller breweries in Skagarfjörður, Flóahreppur, Borgarfjörður and Dalvík producing the rest.
Around 500,000 liters of Christmas beer were sold over the festive season.

The exchange of power in Iceland took place yesterday when the government of Sigmundur Davíð Gunnlaugsson formally took over from that of Jóhanna Sigurðardóttir and ministers exchange keys.

One of the last tasks of Steingrímur J. Sigfússon while in office as minister of industries and innovation was to issue a regulation on Monday extending the reserve for whales in Faxaflói bay, off Reykjavík in Southwest Iceland. The regulation took affect at midnight.
