U.S. coffeehouse chain Starbucks might be coming to Iceland and the first steps towards entering the Icelandic market have been made. Starbucks would not comment on it but did not rule out launching operations in Iceland.
The latest newsletter from the Icelandic Patent Office states that Starbucks registered one of its trademarks in Iceland in early November, visir.is reports.
The company has since 2010 registered 30 trademarks in Iceland, including for beverages and restaurant services.
It costs around ISK 1 million (USD 7,900, EUR 6,100) to register trademarks with the Patent Office. The Starbucks trademarks have been registered through the law firm Sigurjónsson og Thor. The law firm would not comment on the story.
In February 2011, the Norwegian media reported that Starbucks was planning to launch operations there.
This autumn it was confirmed that Norwegian businessman Jens Ulltveit-Moe had secured the rights to running Starbucks in Scandinavia and had grand plans.
Starbucks is the world’s largest coffeehouse chain, operating 18,000 cafés and stores in 60 countries.
