Icelandic Minister for Foreign Affairs Össur Skarphéðinsson will cosponsor a resolution at the United Nations General Assembly proposing to upgrade the status of Palestine to a Non-member Observer State of the United Nations. The resolution will be voted on by the UN General Assembly today.
The cosponsoring of the resolution is in line with the government’s policy towards supporting the Palestinian cause, the minister reasoned in a statement to the press yesterday.
“We support the resolution in the strongest terms, while we also believe that Palestine should become a fully-fledged Member State of the UN. Our decision to cosponsor the resolution is to lend further support to this goal of the Palestinians,” Össur said.
The Icelandic Parliament voted unanimously in recognizing Palestine’s sovereignty last year.

The road to Höfn, a 1,690-person harbor town by the fjord Hornafjörður, is lined with reindeer. Whole herds of the wild horned animals rest peacefully on withered pastures, grace next to sheep and horses and bounce along the road. Soon, Vatnajökull, Europe’s largest glacier and the region’s biggest attraction, comes into view. Looming over Höfn, its outlet glaciers flow down from the mountains on which the bright white icecap rests.
