The exhibition Iceland and Architecture in the joint embassy for the Nordic countries in Berlin goes on show today. The exhibition highlights approaches following the economic crash in Iceland in 2008.
The exhibition includes interviews with selected experts, photographs by Guðmundur Ingólfsson and the documentary Future of Hope. The exhibition poses the following questions:
-What architecture is to be found in a country that has no traditional building materials like wood or bricks, that builds its houses out of grass and earth?
-What heights did concrete construction reach?
-What effect did the sudden prosperity have, when Iceland became the wealthiest country in Europe, which was then followed by the sudden crash?
-Will architecture have a future in Iceland?
The exhibition is the result of collaboration between the German Architecture Museum Frankfurt, Sagenhaftes Island – Guest of Honour at the Frankfurt Book Fair 2011 and the Embassy of Iceland.
