Evidence suggests that a glacial outburst flood has occurred in Grímsvötn volcano in Vatnajökull glacier. GPS data shows that the ice level has decreased, a strong indication that a flood has started.
According to Víðis Reynisson, divisional manager at the Civil Protection Department of the National Commissioner of the Icelandic Police, hydrologists are on their way to Grímsvötn to take samples. Until then, it is difficult to establish with certainty whether a flood has started, mbl.is reports.
However, if a flood has started, it will unlikely be a big one, Víðir stated, as there isn’t much water in the kettles.
Grímsvötn last erupted in 2011, causing a significant amount of ash to fall in South Iceland. A glacial outburst isn’t necessarily an indication of an upcoming eruption.
