Icelanders Text Friends in Record Frequency

In the first six months of 2012 Icelanders sent 102 million text messages, or at total of 560,439 per day, up by 12 percent compared to the same period in 2011. This equates to each Icelander sending roughly 1.8 texts per day. Icelanders also sent 1.1 million MMSes in the same period.

Total mobile subscriptions totaled 393,099 in this first year that Icelanders own more smart phones (54 percent) than regular mobile phones (46 percent), visir.is reports.

Landline subscriptions on the other hand are in steady decline. The year 2000 was a record year with 159,000 fixed line phone numbers. Today, there are only around 133,000 fixed network subscribers.
