First lady of Iceland and jewelry designer Dorrit Moussaieff opened the new design store ATMO on Laugavegur shopping street in downtown Reykjavík yesterday.
The new store features work by 60 Icelandic designers. Among the items for sale are artworks, clothes, jewelry, perfume and shoes.
“ATMO is a magnet and meeting place for all lovers, both local and foreign, of Icelandic design and also those who wish to experience the creations and newest trends in Iceland,” as stated on the store’s website.
The store is located at Laugavegur 91 near the Hlemmur bus terminal with the second hand store 9 Líf occupying the basement and the design store the upper two floors. Health food restaurant Gló is also in the building.
Among the designers featured in the store are Steinunn, Sóley, Spakmannsspjarir, Stáss, Staka, Sonja Bent, Sápusmiðjan, Skaparinn, Skyn Iceland, Spíral, Sunbird and Scintilla.
Bolli Kristinsson, one of the people behind the project, told Iceland Review that it was good to see so many designers under one roof. “When you see all this Icelandic design together in one place you are surprised by the quality, and there is something, I don’t know what, but something, as different as the design is, that is common; you sense it is Icelandic.”

The road to Höfn, a 1,690-person harbor town by the fjord Hornafjörður, is lined with reindeer. Whole herds of the wild horned animals rest peacefully on withered pastures, grace next to sheep and horses and bounce along the road. Soon, Vatnajökull, Europe’s largest glacier and the region’s biggest attraction, comes into view.
