Icelandic boxer Valgerður Guðsteinsdóttir won gold in the ACBC 2012 international boxing tournament in Gothenburg, Sweden, in early November.
The ACBC (Angered Centrum Box Cup) is the second biggest boxing competition in the worldand has been running since 1987, Fréttablaðið reports.
Valgerður competed in the senior class division under the 57-60 kilogram weight category. Valgerður says she trains six times a week in a special competition group at Hnefaleikastöðin boxing club. This was her first international competition.
“I wanted to do my best and wanted to focus on having good technique and demonstrating beautiful boxing. I was not trying to knock out my opponent with the first punch,” she said of her performance.
According to Valgerður, there are too few women in boxing in Iceland, making it difficult to find opponents and resulting in long pauses between competitions.
Around 600 people competed in this year’s competition, 25 of whom were from Iceland.
