Specialists Submit Report on Iceland Constitution Draft

A group of specialists appointed to review the Constitutional Council’s draft for a new Constitution, submitted its report yesterday, including a number of amendment proposals. The group also suggests that an overall evaluation of the effect of the draft take place.

The proposed changes include simplification of the process of filing charges due to parliamentary elections, making the provisions on the rights of the minority in parliament more consistent and guaranteeing that ministers as well as parliamentarians enjoy protection regarding their comments in parliament, ruv.is reports.

Also, a provision on the right of parents to secure that the education of their children is in accordance with their religion and beliefs was added to the chapter on human rights.

Valgerður Bjarnadóttir, who chair’s the Alþingi parliament’s Constitutional Committee, stated that it would be possible to submit a bill for a new Constitution next week.
