Re: High Levels of Fluoride Found in Hay in East Iceland
High levels of fluoride don’t just result in “deformities” in teeth and bones, it causes crippling, and systemic illness, and if the dose is high enough, it causes death by cardiac or kidney failure.
The animals might already have been poisoned by the fluoride, not to mention the people. They can be checked by having their urine tested in a lab that uses Ion Chromatography equipment. The hand-held Ion Selective Electrode (ISE) most often used, frequently gives false low or negative fluoride reports (sometimes hundreds of milligrams below accurate reporting), and should be discouraged. Someone should make sure that the hay is being tested with something more sophisticated than ISE.
The urine samples can be FedExed to a forensic lab, because most hospitals and clinics do not check for fluoride (at least, not in the U.S.). A U.S. forensic lab that uses IC and is very dependable in my opinion is Armstrong Forensic Lab in Texas.
Given the deadly nature of fluoride toxicity, Alcoa should be monitoring its fluoride contamination levels on at least a monthly basis. Once per year is an outrageous risk.

On the way back to Reykjavík following this morning's news conference, at which the new government agreement was formally presented, the next Prime Minister of Iceland, Sigmundur Davíð Gunnlaugsson, and his assistant, Jóhannes Þór Skúlason, who was driving, were stopped for speeding.
