Iceland’s coach fleet is on average 14.4 years old and in need of renewal, according to the Icelandic Travel Industry Association.
For comparison, Sweden’s coach fleet is 6.2 years old, Norway’s 9.4 and Finland’s 11.6, Morgunblaðið reports.
Project manager for the Icelandic Travel Industry Association Gunnar Valur Sveinsson says the issue must be addressed if Iceland wants to continue to offer a good level of service and have well-paying customers. According to Gunnar Valur, a new coach costs EUR 200-250,000 (ISK 32-40 million, USD 259-324,000).
A total of 2,071 coaches are registered in Iceland, the oldest of which to be registered this year is 15 years old. Coaches are imported to Iceland from Germany, China, the Netherlands and Spain and second-hand coaches from Iceland are sold on the European market.
