Churchill left the cigar in an ashtray in Alþingi, the Icelandic parliament, on August 16, 1941, ruv.is reports.

The cigar is in private ownership, owned by Hjörleifur Hilmarsson, his father whom was present in parliament during Churchill’s visit. Churchill was in Iceland to sign the Atlantic Charter with Franklin D. Roosevelt, the then U.S. president. Churchill gave a speech from the parliament’s balcony.

Registration and payment is required for attendance at the meeting, which includes a lecture and lunch.

Whole herds of the wild horned animals rest peacefully on withered pastures, grace next to sheep and horses and bounce along the road. Soon, Vatnajökull, Europe’s largest glacier and the region’s biggest attraction, comes into view. Looming over Höfn, its outlet glaciers flow down from the mountains on which the bright white icecap rests.  more
