Quarter of Nine-Year-Olds in Iceland Overweight
A quarter of nine-year-olds in Reykjavík are overweight according to new data from the capital area school healthcare services.

The new data shows that 4.8 percent of nine-year-olds are obese and 18.5 percent are overweight, totaling around 23 percent, mbl.is reports.
The data and other recent studies show a sharp increase in the number of overweight nine-year-olds in the latter part of the 20th century. Less than 1 percent of nine-year-olds in Reykjavík were obese in 1958 and a total of 6.6 percent of children were above the ideal weight.
By 1998, 5 percent of children of the same age were obese and 23.7 percent were above the recommended ideal weight.
A statement on the website of the Directorate of Health emphasizes the importance of all children exercising and eating healthy, regardless of whether they are overweight or not.
