The leaders of Iceland’s political parties met in the cabinet yesterday to discuss a cross-political reconciliation on Icesave. The meeting was long and fruitless; it remains unclear whether renegotiations with British and Dutch authorities will take place.
When asked what had been discussed during the meeting, Bjarni Benediktsson, chairman of the Independence Party, the largest opposition party, told Morgunbladid, “Not much. But it is also news that we are not getting many answers.”
Sigmundur Davíd Gunnlaugsson, chairman of the second largest opposition party, the Progressive Party, agreed. “[The government] won’t even tell us who they are talking with and what has been discussed.”
Both chairmen are hoping for renegotiations before the planned Icesave referendum takes place.
“If nothing happens in the next two weeks or so I think it’s impossible to reach a new position before that time and then we should just continue with the referendum,” Benediktsson said.
The cabinet ministers would not be interviewed last night.

Hendrikka Waage is an accomplished jewellery designer whose first children’s book Rikka and Her Magic Ring in Iceland, takes readers on an enchanted and educational journey through the country. It’s beautifully illustrated and a good lesson in geography, but the plot could have been better thought through and the moral of the story is a bit too prominent.

On the third day of the Eyjafjallajökull eruption we drove from Skógar to Hvolsvöllur in total darkness, a distance of 18 kilometers. It was frightening, the darkness being so impenetrable that we could hardly see out the windows of the car. We could see faint lights from the farm standing right next to the highway.
