A fiber optic marine cable on behalf of FARICE was installed in a 2.5-kilometer area belonging to the Surtsey island nature reserve last week. It is uncertain whether this will affect the island’s listing as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Surtsey was added to the UNIESCO World Heritage list on July 8. Three days later FARICE applied for permission for the marine cable and it was granted by the Environment Agency of Iceland on August 4, 24 Stundir reports.
Permission was granted for two marine cables: a fiber optic cable on behalf of TeleGreenland between Iceland and Greenland and from there to Newfoundland, which is the one that was installed last week. The other is the fiber optic cable DANICE which will connect Iceland and Denmark.
“It went through the channels here [at the agency] and a permit was issued,” said Hjalti J. Gudmundsson, manager of the nature resources division at the Environment Agency of Iceland.
Gudmundsson said it is unclear what effect the operations will have on the position of Surtsey on the UNESCO World Heritage list. “They have received a message from me but have yet to take a stance.”
Surtsey was created in a volcanic eruption which lasted from November 1963 to June 1967 and has since then been preserved as a living laboratory. The island was declared a nature reserve by the Icelandic authorities in May 2006.

Norwegian lawyer Morten Furuholmen is preparing a lawsuit against Icelandic authorities for what he calls an unfounded arrest of Leif Ivar Kristiansen, the leader of the Hells Angels motorcycle club in Norway, at Keflavík International Airport yesterday.

Icelandair has submitted a request to the Ministries of Justice and Industry that operating casinos be legalized in Iceland. The company is interested in opening a casino at the Hilton Hotel Nordica on Sudurlandsbraut in Reykjavík.

When I first heard of the photographic book Legend by Fiann Paul, portraying people dressed in Viking-style in Icelandic landscapes, I imagined it would depict scenes from Norse mythology. However, the idea with the book is to tell a story of how “The Seeker” finds “The Legend” and it feels like a wishy-washy self-help book.
