According to a ten-point action plan introduced by the Social Democrats for a new government to carry out until the next parliamentary elections, a referendum on EU membership for Iceland would take place on May 30.

The Social Democrats also propose that the elections take place on the same day, and not May 9 as earlier proposed, Morgunbladid reports. However, according to Fréttabladid, the Left-Greens want elections to be held as early as possible, preferably in April.

According to Morgunbladid, the Social Democrats’ action plan further includes that the constitution be amended to enable a more rapid process for EU membership application and that a proposal on a constitutional parliament, which has the authority to amend the constitution, be submitted.

The Social Democrats also want the board of Central Bank governors to step down and then to amend the laws on the bank so that there can only be one governor at a time, who will be appointed on the basis of his or her qualifications according to international standards.

Furthermore, the Social Democrats want to establish a monetary policy council and appoint a special committee to review the monetary policy of the Central Bank.

The party’s action plan also includes emergency measures to prevent the bankruptcy of households and companies and the establishment of an information center on the government’s actions to counteract the consequences of the banking system collapse.

The Social Democrats emphasize that the economic stabilization program of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) must be followed.

The Left-Greens declared earlier this month that they remain against EU membership for Iceland.
